“I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s both funny and heartfelt,
and a combination of the two is extremely rare.”

Director's Statement

In writing this story, we wanted to convey the theme of hope, using symbolism, realism and the abstract, while balancing it with a quirky, comedic edge.  Rose represents our perpetual need to “hold on” to that intangible called hope.

In contrasting Rose’s two worlds, “Hold On” was shot with two distinctly different looks.

The exterior scenes, representing her vibrancy and desires outside of her work, were shot almost documentary style, using natural lighting and a lot of hand held and fluid shots.

The interiors of Rose’s mansion reveal the essence of her inner life, her achievements and her loneliness, and have a much more cinematic feel, almost fantastical in nature.

The music in “Hold On” is an integral part of our story. Our theme was inspired by an early 20th century hymn, “Gospel Plow.” We used later covers entitled, “Hold On” and “Eyes on the Prize.”

They talk about enduring any struggle for the sake of the ultimate objective: freedom. It seems that in history as well as today, freedom translates into hope.
